Compare qualifications
Universities, polytechnics and private providers offer qualifications of different levels and lengths. Polytechnics also award degrees. Compare the qualification rather than assuming that a shorter course delivers the same visa outcome at half the cost.
Request current admission requirements, total course fees, additional charges and refund terms. Check the programme and provider with NZQA.
Vocational education changes in 2026
Ten regional polytechnics began operating independently on 1 January 2026. Te Pūkenga was renamed NZIST as a transitional organisation. It is not a synonym for every college.
Check which institution delivers your programme and awards the qualification. Ask about continuity of teaching and student support where a provider is changing.

Visa, funding and work during study
Fee Paying Student Visa is a common paid-study route; check English Language Student Visa for language courses. Your offer, funding, tuition and insurance must meet the particular route’s requirements.
Eligible student visas may permit up to 25 hours of work a week. An existing 20-hour condition does not change automatically: obtain an approved change first. Future earnings do not replace acceptable funding evidence.

After graduation
Post-Study Work Visa eligibility depends on the qualification and required conditions. Pure English-language study is not enough by itself. Study and subsequent temporary work do not guarantee residence.
The extension for eligible level-7 graduate diploma holders with a bachelor’s degree is announced for 16 November 2026. On 15 October it remains forthcoming. Recheck the operative INZ rules before paying.
