How much a trip from Moscow to New Zealand costs: budget for 2-3 weeks

A trip to New Zealand is expensive, and it is better to accept that before planning. The country is far away, prices are close to other developed Pacific destinations, and the flight from Moscow is long. The figures below are best treated as planning ranges, because exchange rates and season can move the final budget noticeably.

Flights and visa

Flights are the biggest expense. Return economy tickets from Moscow with connections vary strongly by season and booking timing. Booking several months ahead usually gives more choice and less stress.

The visa costs less than the flight, but requires more paperwork. Include the application fee, possible visa-centre costs, translations and small document expenses that often appear during preparation.

Accommodation and getting around the country

Accommodation ranges from hostel beds and budget motels to mid-range hotels and apartments. For two people, an apartment can be better value than a hotel room in some towns.

A car is usually the most flexible way to travel. Without one, many natural places become harder to reach because buses are limited and national parks are not always easy by public transport.

Food and experiences

Eating out in New Zealand is not cheap. Cooking from supermarkets can reduce the food budget substantially, especially on a longer trip.

Many of the best impressions are free: tracks, viewpoints and beaches. Paid experiences are the ones that need transport, guides or access, such as cruises, geothermal parks, Hobbiton, hot pools or helicopter flights.

The final budget

A modest two-week trip can still cost a serious amount once flights are included. A comfortable mid-range trip with motels and a rental car sits higher, and a premium version with hotels, restaurants and a dense activity plan rises quickly.

Add a 10-15% reserve. Bad weather, a taxi, replacement clothing, medical costs or last-minute booking changes are normal risks on a long trip to an expensive country.
